FAQs

  • Many parents wonder why their teen won’t open up to them and feel guilty or embarrassed about taking their teen to therapy. This is very common, and our aim is to partner with parents to help teens learn better ways to express and communicate their feelings. Teens may not talk to their parents due to developmental changes, fear of judgment, the influence of peers, or emotional challenges. We can offer guidance, support, and practical strategies to parents, empowering them to create an open and healthy communication environment with their teen.

  • How long a client needs therapy depends on many factors such as the client’s symptoms, environment (school and home), and personal goals. Our goal is to help clients and families find help and relief for their symptoms and challenges as quickly as possible; however, therapy is a process and not a quick fix. Every client is different, so we cannot guarantee results within a certain time frame. We aim to collaborate with parents to decide what works best for their family. We meet with parents during the first session to discuss their concerns while collaborating with them to formulate a good treatment plan. We strive to regularly update and communicate with parents throughout the process about their child’s progress. Some clients begin to see benefits and improvements after only 2-3 sessions. On average, most of our clients come for at least 10-12 sessions while learning new skills and coping strategies that will help them to manage their stress and challenges independently.

  • Determining if your teen needs therapy can depend on several factors. Look for signs such as persistent changes in behavior, declining academic performance, withdrawal from social activities, intense mood swings, or difficulties managing emotions. Trust your instincts as a parent, and if you have concerns about your teen's well-being, reach out for help.

  • Parents will conduct the consult call with the therapist. The parent will also come to the initial Intake Session with the teen to meet with the therapist. Most of the sessions will be with the teen and therapist only, but we will figure out the best way for the parent to be updated. If the teen is comfortable, we might encourage parents to join the last 5 minutes of a session to discuss the session and the progress made. Additionally, if you and your child see fit, you can have family sessions from time to time. Or we may recommend separate parent consultation sessions.

  • The type of therapy that is best for teens can vary depending on their specific needs and challenges. At Reach Counseling, we use a variety of effective therapy approaches for teens including acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for tolerating difficult thoughts and emotions, mindfulness, expressive arts, sandtray, play and activities-based therapy, and family therapy to address relational dynamics. We can assess your teen's needs and recommend the most suitable therapy approach for their well-being.
